‘It’s powerful’: Excitement for Indigenous Round Dance this weekend at Medicine Hat College

Carol Syrette who is Indigenous started working at the Miywasin Friendship Centre over a decade ago.

She felt like she was disconnected from her culture before that.

Through learning about the traditional ribbon skirt and how to make it she feels she was able to get even more in touch with her identity.

Round dances help bring the community together while celebrating Indigenous culture.

Syrette is excited for the round dance taking place this weekend at the college, and will wear her ribbon skirt.

She adds that Indigenous people are thirsty for their culture and knows that there are a lot of allies who want to be part of reconciliation action.

“We’re holding hands and we’re listening to the drum beat and it’s powerful to holding hands with a whole bunch of people that are part of your community coming together,” Syrette said.

“You could feel like the drumbeat, and it’s just that connection, you look around, you see smiling faces and people are just so happy to be there.”

The round dance takes place Saturday evening at six in the Medicine Hat College gym.

Chasity Cairns, manager of Indigenous engagement and student supports at the college agrees that if you attend you will feel the drum beat in your heart and while dancing our ancestors are there and they hear us.

“Whatever that individual is carrying on their heart, they come to bring us strength to move forward in the year,” Cairns said.

“It’s about learning about our culture, you know, opening your hearts and minds to learning about another culture and then also participating and experiencing it,” she added.

“Kind of brings that education and understanding that we need and then also building relationships with people in our community.”

Everyone is welcome to attend.
