10-year-old raises disability awareness with Medicine Hat College students

Kids spend most of their time learning from adults, but sometimes, adults can learn from kids, too.

That’s what happened Tuesday night, when a 10-year-old boy did a speech for Medicine Hat College early learning and childcare students.

Many of them were impressed by the confidence and bravery it took to share his story.

Reid Hintz has a joint condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita.

Reid wanted to share his story with the students so he can educate others on what it’s like to have a physical disability.

“So more people will join the disability world,” Reid told CHAT News after his speech.

Right now, the class is doing a module regarding how children and their families are affected by physical disabilities.

Linda Langevin, the class instructor, has known Reid since he was a baby and picked him to speak because of his outgoing personality.

“When we get a real person that is so well spoken it’s gonna have a lifelong impact for [the students],” Langevin said.

For student Jordan Huntley, Reid’s speech did make an instant impact.

“He’s so inspiring. That’s the one word I have for it,” Huntley said.

As for student Rohit Kaushel, he’ll cherish his conversation with Reid because he hopes to own his own education facility one day for those with disabilities.

“He’s making jokes and he’s very humorous. He’s very adaptive of what he’s going through, and it really motivates me,” Kaushel said.

Reid said he hopes he taught the students the right and wrong ways to interact with a person with a disability.

“I hope they talk to them with respect,” Reid said.

Reid wants to do more speeches at the college in the future.

With how enthralled the students were, Langevin is pretty sure Reid will be back soon.
