New covered outdoor rink in Dunmore ready for skaters

The new EDF Outdoor Recreation Centre in Dunmore had it’s first ever skaters early last week.

The new facility replaced the old outdoor rink that had been taken down in the summer of 2022 after serving the community for over 20 years.

The facility cost just over $400,000 to build with funds raised through Cypress County, a Community Facility Enhancement Program Grant and a number of other sponsors.

EDF Renewables where given the naming rights after a $150,000 donation and an additional $10,000 of annual support.

The outdoor rink has lighting to offer people the ability to skate on the ice at all hours.

The Sunrise Skate Shack at the facility is coded entry, with the code available for Dunmore Community Association members. It’s available to access daily from 7am-11pm.

Nicole Johnson, Treasurer with the Dunmore Community Association said that the overhead roof gives the outdoor rink a unique feel.

“Yeah I think it’s almost kind of the best of both worlds maybe in some ways,” Johnson said.

“Because you do get that, you know nostalgic outdoor ice feeling, but hopefully makes the ice easier to maintain, cuts down on the wind for the kids.”

“It should be really nice for them to use.”

The facility is also available for private bookings through the Dunmore Community Association which includes the use of the skate shack and washrooms.
