Alberta ends grid alert

Jan 15, 2024 | 9:02 AM

Update: A grid alert issued earlier today has ended. The Alberta Electric System Operator says wind and solar generation have provided some relief.

But it’s urging Albertans to continue conserving energy between peak hours of 4 to 7 p-m as extreme cold persists across Western Canada.

The operator issues the warnings to reduce the possibility of serious measures to balance the system, including rotating power outages.

Earlier story

The City of Medicine Hat is asking residents to help others in Alberta.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) declared another grid alert due to the extreme cold, and several power facility outages. The alert was declared Monday at 8a.m..

Here are some following ways we can help

-Turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances
-Minimize the use of space heaters
-Delay the use of major power-consuming appliances such as washers, dryers and dishwashers
-Delay charging electric vehicles and/or plugging in block heaters
-Cook with your microwave, crockpot or toaster oven instead of the stove
-Limit the use of kitchen or bathroom ventilation fans

Grid Alerts are issued when the Alberta power system is under stress. This triggers the AESO to prepare to use emergency measures to meet demand and maintain system reliability.
