$10K stolen in Medicine Hat break-in, expert recommends installing deadbolts

A recent break-in at a home in the Southridge neighbourhood of Medicine Hat is prompting some to take a closer look at their home security.

The suspect gained access to the home through an attached garage, stealing about $10,000 worth of items from the garage.

The suspect fled the home after being spotted by the homeowner.

Medicine Hat Police were unable to comment Thursday on active break and enter cases.

However, Robyn Mann from Keyway Security Locksmiths has seen an increase in call volume since the new year, especially in the Crescent Heights area.

“Most doorknobs are meant for latching and are fairly easy to break into quietly.” Mann told CHAT News.

“Deadbolts should be your main point of security. We always recommend deadbolts for residential buildings, commercial buildings or condo units.”

According to Mann, most houses already have a deadbolt installed, but are simply not latched. Deadbolts are designed to to lock past the doorjamb, going into the buildings structure, significantly increasing the strength.

“Pricing for new deadbolts are affordable for homeowners.” Mann said.

“For the most part, residential deadbolts are usually between that 45 dollar to 65 dollar range, so they’re still within most people’s price point. Once you get into commercial deadbolts or electronic locks, the price does go up.”

Mann recommended calling for proper installation to make sure it is done correctly. Incorrect installation can damage the door and prove costly.
