Dumpster and encampment fires a concern for Medicine Hat fire service

Jan 4, 2024 | 4:28 PM

Dumpster and encampment fires have become an bigger concern for Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services during the past year.

Carter Gramlich, a fire prevention officer with the service, said there are ways the public can help reduce these fires from happening.

“People should be mindful of you know, the accumulation of items around their property that could be combustibles or could be used if somebody was looking to set a fire,” Gramlich told CHAT News.

“So just be mindful of you know what’s laying around your property and dispose of debris that doesn’t need to be there.”

Gramlich said that a fire in a dumpster full of cardboard or garbage can produce a lot of heat in it, which can be quite concerning if there is a nearby building.
