Smile Sunday: Medicine Hat father brings white Christmas magic to his front lawn

Dec 31, 2023 | 8:50 AM

A Medicine Hat father made sure his kids were not just dreaming of a white Christmas.

This was thanks to the efforts of Colton Kambeitz, who wanted to make Christmas a little more special for his kids by hauling snow to the his front lawn.

In the Kambeitz household the kids are James, who is seven, Jayda, who is five, and Sage who is only four months old.

The wife of Colton, and mother of the children, Amber Kambeitz, knew about the plan for the snow and says she was happy to see her husband execute it.

“I did know, we kind of talked about it for a couple of days, because Hockey Hounds isn’t too far from our house so he said that he wanted to give the kids a white Christmas,” Kambeitz said.

“So we kind of talked about snow with the kids and how wouldn’t it be awesome to have some snow and stuff like that,” Kambeitz added.

“The kids the night before Colton did it, he said I really wish that we had some snow. Colton said the night before Christmas Eve that is was the perfect night to get the snow.”

“So Colton went went over to the Hockey Hounds and filled four truck loads of snow that he brought over to our house. It took him about four hours. He spread it all around and the kids woke up and they were pretty excited to see it.”

The Kambeitz’s live about a block away from the Hockey Hounds arena where Colton hauled the Zamboni snow from.

Colton and Amber’s son James noticed the white Christmas when he looked out the window Christmas Eve.

James also noticed it was only on their lawn and had said to his parents, “Something is fishy.”

James and Jayda were happy to play in the snow and where very thankful for the work their dad did. Colton wasn’t home at the time as he had to head to work in the early hours this morning.

Colton’s cousin Chad Luker says that he found out about the snow in the Kambeitz front yard from a post on Colton’s social media and was quite proud of him. He even claimed Colton as being father of the year for his efforts.

“I think he’s the type of guy who just loves his kids and I thought it was just awesome that he went the extra mile to make it an extra white Christmas for his kids.” Luker said.

Ambert Kambeitz is also quite proud of her husbands efforts. She said being the only house in the city with a full front yard of snow has made for some fun interactions.

“We’ve seen so pretty funny ones, like the neighbours across the street, they thought it was pretty funny,” Kambetiz said.

“They said they woke up so confused and they said you shouldn’t do that to old people,” Kambeitz added while laughing.

“We’ve had people slowly drive by and then we’ve had people honking at us and giving us the thumbs up…it’s pretty awesome to see. It’s kind of funny too.”

That leaves the rest of us only dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones we used to know.
