Christmas sales going better than might be expected for a pair of stores in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT — With Christmas just a few days away, most people should be getting close to finishing their Christmas shopping.

With the cost of living rising over the last few years you might think there would be a little less money to spend during this time of year.

For a pair of business owners in Medicine Hat, business has gone better than one might expect.

Sarah McNeill, owner of 7 Rivers Trading Co. has been in business for two and a half years. She is still looking to continue to grow her customer base and has not noticed a dip in sales.

“Not for us, I noticed a slow start to the year,” McNeill said.

“The weather I think people were just having a hard time getting into Christmas. But for us we are pretty much on par with last year,” McNeill added.

“We really appreciate people shopping local for Christmas. There are a lot of great stores downtown and our store specifically has everything made in Alberta.”

“So you are supporting all the makers across the province when you shop here.”

It’s been much the same for one of the longest established businesses in the city. Todd Wright, a fifth generation owner at Wright’s Jewelry said it’s been business as usual.

“We haven’t really noticed a down tick of any kind on our end,” Wright said.

“I think the weather is a big factor at play for the emphasis, the excitement of Christmas doesn’t seem the same. But we have got pretty loyal customers and it’s been very supportive,” Wright added.

“Our slogan right now is we have been open helping Santa for 125 years locally and we really just appreciate all the support Medicine Hat and surrounding communities have given us.”

“We hope we are bucking a trend if there is a trend of downwards, we find that it’s holding it’s own.”

A pair of local business owners did mention off camera to CHAT News that they have both noticed a drop in sales. With one owner saying she has talked to a number of business owners in the city who have seen a downward trend in sales.
