More trips to the mountains as Cypress Nordic Ski Club awaits snow in Elkwater

ELKWATER, AB – It’s not a good outlook for those hoping December would be the month they could start outdoor winter sports and activities. For the Cypress Nordic Ski Club, it means they’ve been to trekking to the mountains more than usual.

Gregg Campbell is a board member with the Ski Club. Usually, he and other members would be in Elkwater, cross-country skiing the groomed trails. However, right now there’s just a couple centimeters of snow and they need at least 15 for ideal conditions.

The Ski Club was created less than a year ago, so Campbell says it’s been a disappointing start to the season.

“We’re waiting for the weather and we want snow,” says Gregg Campbell. “A little bit sad to to see that our first year with the club that this is happening. Although I guess we’re optimistic that it’ll snow early in the in January.”

With club programs and lessons on the horizon for January in Elkwater, the club is closely monitoring the weather radar.

One of the upcoming programs is the Skill Development Program, featuring sessions tailored for kids aged 4-9 years old. This program is scheduled to run from January to March.

An Elkwater park employee told Campbell that there will potentially be enough snow to begin grooming the cross-country trails by January 2nd.
