Medicine Hat takes first step forward into environment policy with goals approval

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city is one step closer to implementing an environmental framework after giving the go-ahead Monday.

Council gave unanimous approval to several topics included in Medicine Hat’s draft environmental framework, a step along the way to voting on full implementation anticipated in April 2024.

Water, energy and air, ecosystem and agriculture, recycling and waste management and community and land development were all approved topics.

Those topics, and related goals, will be the first bits of the framework implemented across the city’s departments starting immediately.

The Environment, Land and Gas Production department will lead the implementation of those goals, a process that is expected to be a long term process with progress reports.

Developing a city-wide water management strategy, enhancing outdoor air quality and creating a community education and outreach program are just three of dozens of goals outlined in the framework.

The initiative also received an additional $80,000 in funding by a grant from the Alberta Municipalities. That grant, accepted by city council Monday, boosts the total budget for the framework project to $280,000.

Coun. Alison Van Dyke told CHAT News the city is only catching up to other Alberta municipalities with this framework.

“I sit on a provincial group with a lot of councillors from other municipalities and there’s a lot of work being done in not just the big cities of Calgary and Edmonton but even just the little small towns and counties as well,” Van Dyke said.

“A lot of focus has been on the impacts of climate change and we see that here as well.”
