Canadian men face tough challenge at last-chance rugby sevens Olympic qualifier
The Canadian men’s rugby sevens team faces a tough challenge in its final bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
South Africa will be favoured to win the 12-team men’s repechage tournament, scheduled for June 21-23 at Stade Louis II in Monaco with the final spot in the 12-team Olympic field on the line.
The Blitzboks won the opening round of the HSBC SVNS season in Dubai earlier this month and currently stand second in the overall standings after two events. The South Africa men finished fifth at the Tokyo Olympics and won bronze at the Rio Games.
Canada is currently ranked ninth in the SVNS standings. Britain, which sits 10th, and Spain, 11th, are the other core teams in the repechage.
