Medicine Hat council hears proposal to disclose salaries of staff, elected officials

Dec 5, 2023 | 10:15 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A city councillor launched an effort Monday evening to release approximate salary information for all Medicine Hat employees and council members.

Position titles, the number of positions, salary ranges, pension information and details about employee benefits would all be part of the compensation disclosure list that will be proposed by Coun. Andy McGrogan.

Employee names and exact salaries would not be included in such a public disclosure, according to a notice of motion in the Monday council meeting agenda.

The motion directs the city to make the information public on a yearly basis via the city’s website in conjunction with the release of the City of Medicine Hat’s annual report.

A letter, signed by some 285 residents and addressed to Alberta government officials, lists releasing the salary information of city and COMCO employees as a demand. COMCO is the city’s utility business.

McGrogan’s proposal was brought forward as a notice of motion and therefore any council action on the idea will not take place until a later meeting.
