Vigil being held for 34th anniversary of Montreal massacre

Dec 1, 2023 | 9:42 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A local vigil is being held Dec. 6 at Medicine Hat College to mark the 34th anniversary of the Montreal massacre.

The vigil, hosted by the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, will get underway at 5:30 p.m. in Centennial Hall at the college.

“Thirty-four years ago, 14 women were killed at l’École Polytechnique in a horrific act of violence and hate,” the society’s executive director, Natasha Carvalho, said in a statement Friday.

“It was a tragic moment in Canadian history, and also deeply connected to the violence that is an every day realty for many women in Alberta, Canada and around the world,” Carvalho added.

The vigil will also mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Most recent figures from the United Nations estimates that in 2022, nearly 89,000 women and girls were killed intentionally across the globe — the highest yearly number recorded in the past two decades.

In Canada, it’s estimated that more than 160 women have been killed so far in 2023 – mostly by men in situations related to family violence and/or gender-based violence.
