Medicine Hat releases utility rates for December, electricity rates drop

Dec 1, 2023 | 9:52 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat has released its utility rates for the month of December and the electricity default rate has dropped compared to the previous month.

The December natural gas default rate is $2.827 per gigajoule, up from the previous month of $2.784 per gigajoule.

The rate is based on the average of the monthly gas charges set by Alberta gas distribution owners. The city calculates the monthly reference price based on the average of the rates approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.

On Nov. 20, city council amended the gas utility bylaw in order to provide consumers with a single natural gas rate starting Jan. 1, 2024.

Consumers may still enter Fixed or Variable natural gas contracts up until Dec. 31, at which time all contracts will expire in favour of the new rate.

Under the new formula, the December electricity default rate for residential, farm, small to medium businesses, unmetered services and rental lighting customers is $0.10875 per kilowatt hour, down from the previous month of $0.10900 per kilowatt hour for November.

The December default electricity rate for Large Commercial, Industrial and Street Lighting customers is $0.18310 per kilowatt hour.

Customers also have a “Going Green” surcharge on their bill. This surcharge is for renewable energy purchased for residential, farm, small and medium commercial customers.

The Going Green surcharge is calculated monthly to recover costs incurred to purchase renewable energy.

The Going Green surcharge for December is $0.001 per kilowatt hour.
