Local resident accused in connection with grandparent scam in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat, AB – A 46-year-old resident is facing charges related to the “Grandparent scam” in Medicine Hat.

Police issued a warning to the public on Tuesday that the scam was once again circulating in the city after receiving multiple reports from residents.

As a result of these reports, the Medicine Hat Police Service Criminal Investigation section and the patrol section identified and charged a 46-year-old.

The charges include theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and breach of a release order.

The accused is currently in custody pending the next court appearance on Thursday.

The grandparent scam targets older people. In this scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a con artist pretending to be their grandchildren. The caller will indicate they are in some kind of serious trouble and need money immediately.

The investigation continues and police are asking anyone who has been impacted by this same to contact MHPS by calling 403-529-8421.
