Grandparent scam

Familiar scam targeting grandparents circulating in Medicine Hat

Nov 28, 2023 | 11:19 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–A familiar scam is once again making the rounds in Medicine Hat.

The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) says it is receiving reports about the “Grandparent Scam.”

In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a con artist pretending to be their grandchildren. The caller will indicate that they are in trouble, either a car accident, returning from a foreign country, or in jail and need money immediately.

The caller will play on emotion asking the victim for help or telling them they are scared and need the money sent ASAP. Unfortunately, victims do not verify the story until after the money has been sent.

Variations on the scam are an old neighbor, a friend of the family etc. but predominantly the emergency scam is directed towards seniors and grandparents.

If you or someone you know has received such a request for money, take measures to verify the requestor’s identity and the legitimacy of their story before you complete the transaction.

If you have fallen victim to this scam, and have not already reported it, please contact the MHPS at 403-529-8481.

The public is being asked to speak to any seniors in their lives to ensure they are informed and do not fall victim to these scammers.
