Province announces funds for rural seniors to escape elder abuse
LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta said more needs to be done to protect the victims of elder abuse.
Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon announced $3.3 million in additional funding over three years to provide more spaces for seniors seeking help.
He said elder abuse is a deeply-concerning issue that affects countless seniors in the province.
“Nearly one in 10 Alberta seniors may be subjected to elder abuse, and this is an unacceptable reality we are determined to change,” said Nixon. “Elder abuse can take many forms, from physical harm to financial abuse, and our government is committed to taking strong action to address this issue. The new Safe Spaces program will ensure seniors have a safe place to go if needed.”
