County of Forty Mile to pilot Starlink

Nov 18, 2023 | 11:00 AM

Medicine Hat, AB- The County of Forty Mile is one of three rural areas being given the opportunity to connect with high-speed internet through a pilot program with Starlink.

The Alberta Government has launched a limited time pilot project that will deploy satellite internet technology to some of the most remote and underserved communities. The project is part of the plan to connect every part of the province to high-speed internet by 2027.

Residents and businesses in the County of Forty Mile can apply to be part of the pilot until March 31, 2024. To be eligible, households and businesses must be located in specific areas where land-based internet infrastructure is not yet possible. Eligible Albertans can order the equipment and them apply for a rebate of up to $1,000 to cover the cost of the hardware, shipping, and taxes.

“We are thrilled for our fellow residents in the southern reaches of the County of Forty Mile to have the chance to experience high-speed internet, opening up new possibilities in their farming and ranching endeavors. This advancement ensures that even in our rural landscape where connectivity has been a challenge, our agricultural community can harness the benefits of technology for greater efficiency and innovation, ” said Stacey Barrows, reeve, County of Forty Mile No. 8.
