LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta’s tourism spending levels have returned to pre-pandemic levels, two years ahead of schedule.

The Bootstrap Plan was created in 2021 by Travel Alberta. It focuses on three main points, which are marketing, air access and destination development. Its goal was to rebuild the visitor economy and return to pre-pandemic levels by 2024.

Tourism spending in Alberta reached $10.7 billion in 2022, $600 million more than 2019.

Jon Mamela, chief commercial officer of Travel Alberta said, “The recovery and growth of Alberta’s visitor economy motivates everything we do, and we are encouraged to see that the tourism industry is bouncing back strongly.”

He continued, “Travel Alberta is proud to play a part in driving economic growth, job creation and the revitalization of industries that depend on tourism across Alberta, and we are committed to continue working with businesses to propel its growth.”

Part of the recovery plan was to increase Travel Alberta’s budget by $9 million over the past three years.

Joseph Schow, Minister of Tourism and Sport said, “The tourism industry’s comeback has wide-reaching benefits across the province.”

He continued, “Thanks to the unwavering support of our visitors, the dedication of our industry partners and the resilience of our destinations and operators, Alberta’s tourism industry is recovering faster than expected.”

Officials said tourism is a vital part of Alberta’s economy. It supports many industries such as food and beverage, recreation and entertainment, accommodations and transportation, and travel services.
