MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hometown hockey star Gavin McKenna has found success on the international stage playing for the under 17 Team Canada Red.

Tigers forward McKenna scored a pair of goals and the shoutout winner to lead Canada to a 3-2 victory over Finland on Thursday at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge taking place in Prince Edward Island.

The first goal was off an assist from Cole Reschny at 12:52 in the first period. Just minutes later, Joonas Rajala answered back for Finland with a power play goal after Canada’s Ryan Roobroeck received a charging penalty.

McKenna answered back unassisted with his second point of the night at 9:13 in the second period.

Finland managed to get another power play goal at 2:54 from Max Westergard to send the game at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre to overtime.

With no teams scoring during the OT, Canada and Finland battled it out in the shootout until Finland was unable to respond to McKenna’s successful attempt, handing Canada the win.

McKenna will return to Medicine Hat after the tournament. The gold and bronze medal games take place on Nov. 11.
