Women’s shelter society will walk to remember those lost to family violence

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Tomorrow marks the first day of the family violence prevention month, recognized provincially.

Tomorrow at noon, the Medicine Hat women’s shelter society will lead a downtown walk, adorning the city with purple ribbons. These purple ribbons serve as a tribute for those lost to family violence.

Natasha Carvalho is the executive director of the Medicine Hat women’s shelter society. She says it’s important for people to talk about family violence, recognize that it happens in our community and support people who you believe are in trouble.

“We know that a lot of people are killed by family violence and homicide and so we just wanted to take a moment to remember that,” says Carvalho. “It actually started off many years ago when we lost a client to a murder suicide and so we always just remember her on that day, and just remember that lives are lost, that this is a deadly epidemic.”
