Release Update: A Porcupine’s Journey Home
Earlier this winter, on one of Saskatchewan’s coldest days, WRSOS received a call about a porcupine in distress. He had taken shelter on a front porch and had been there since the previous morning. The homeowner noticed the porcupine was unable to climb and missing several quills, clear signs that something was wrong. Thanks to their compassion and persistence, the caller stayed in contact with WRSOS throughout the process. Our volunteers Patti and Bonnie responded quickly and safely transported the injured porcupine to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon. The porcupine was treated for an injury to his back and remained under care for several weeks while his wound healed and his fur began to grow back. When he was ready for the next phase of recovery, Salthaven West Wildlife in Regina was asked by the WCVM to provide pre-release care. Their experienced team gave the porcupine the final stretch of care needed to prepare him for life back in the wild. WRSOS arranged and carried out his transport from the WCVM to Salthaven West. The story came full circle when the porcupine was released right back onto the acreage where he was first found. The original caller, who had hoped all along to see him returned, was thrilled to welcome him back to the place he belongs. This rescue highlights the impact of teamwork and collaboration. We’re grateful to the WCVM Small Animal Clinic (Veterinary Medical Centre), Salthaven West, and our dedicated WRSOS volunteers for working together to ensure the best possible outcome for this porcupine. A special thank you to The Eric S. Margolis Foundation, without whose generous support rescues and releases like this simply wouldn’t be possible. And a big thank you as well to Landon, a dedicated volunteer with Salthaven West, and his friend for making the long drive to return this porcupine to Saskatoon for release. Check out the video of this release on Facebook or TikTok or the full version on YouTube and see the moment this porcupine returned to the wild where he belongs!
