Human rights commissioner resigns over Saskatchewan’s pronoun bill

REGINA – Former Saskatchewan human rights commissioner Heather Kuttai says she had no choice but to resign over the province’s proposed pronoun legislation.

Kuttai announced her resignation Monday in a letter to Premier Scott Moe, saying the policy assaults the human rights of vulnerable children.

She says the legislation also affects her personally, as her son is transgender.

The former commissioner says if the legislation passes with the notwithstanding clause, the province will no longer be a place that takes care of all its children.

The province announced the policy in the summer, requiring parental consent for pronoun and name changes in schools for students under 16.

It then tabled legislation last week with those rules after a judge granted an injunction to pause it until a challenge could be hear in court later this year.

Saskatchewan Justice Minister Bronwyn Eyre says she’s sorry to learn of Kuttai’s resignation.

The minister says people have different views on the pronoun policy, including parents.
