MEDICINE HAT — It’s easy to see the impact of a dry summer with a simple glance at the South Saskatchewan river in Medicine Hat.

Alberta Environment has issued water shortage advisories for select water management areas in the province, including the South Saskatchewan in both directions from Medicine Hat.

The report notes water levels in the South Saskatchewan River Basin are generally below normal to normal.

Similar water levels are found in the Bow and Oldman rivers, which combine to form the South Saskatchewan near Grassy Lake.

Water management actions are in place and Alberta environment says licensees are advised to review the conditions of their licences.

No further temporary diversion licences to draw surface water are being accepted for the South Saskatchewan basin.

The city of Medicine Hat began Phase 1 of a water shortage management plan on August 28.

Voluntary water conservations measures remain in effect, but the city says there is no imminent concern with the City’s raw water supply from the South Saskatchewan River.
