City council to receive final report on future of recreational facilities tonight

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The future of recreational facilities in Medicine Hat will be in front of Medicine Hat city council tonight.

Council will pore over a report that looks at the current state of facilities in Medicine Hat, and a long list of options going forward.

Administration has been working on this report since March of 2022.

It looks at the challenges surrounding current facilities, including their age and the possibility they’re operating past their intended lifetime.

The aging population of the city also impacts future plans as well as the location of facilities.

The report identifies areas where services overlap and where there are gaps as well.

It compares the cost of maintaining current facilities as well as options for replacing them.

The city hosted several open houses as part of the process of drafting this report, and notes that engagement with regional partners is planned once the future direction has been determined by city council.
