Medicine Hat SPCA sets high goal for 2023 Katch ‘n Kennel

MEDICINE HAT, AB – In just over two months a number of high-profile Hatters will be jailed. Before then you can make sure your family, friends and co-workers are also brought to justice.

It’s all for a good cause.

The Medicine Hat SPCA is hosting its sixth Katch ‘n Kennel event on Sept. 23 at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede.

In addition to the regular Katch ‘n Kennel where local celebs are publicly kenneled and must raise bail money to get out, this year you can snitch on those closest to you.

“If somebody in your household is maybe on your last nerve or has done something that may be you don’t agree with it’s a great opportunity to ‘snitch’ on them,” explains Linda Tooth, SPCA board vice-president.

“Somebody in the community, maybe a co-worker, family member has done something you can put them on that snitch list and then if they want to come off and not be publicly shamed then they can donate back to the SPCA and we’ll remove them from the snitch list.”

Tooth says the goal is to raise $50,000 which will cover about half of the SPCA’s veterinary bills over the year.

“We are occupying a full house so everything that comes in, every animal that comes in obviously is vet checked and a lot of them are coming in with some conditions that need to be addressed,” she explains. “So the vet bills obviously get a little bit higher with each animal that comes in so it’s an opportunity for us to help offset our growing vet costs.”

Tooth says things are good overall at the SPCA thanks to the hard-working and caring staff that look after the animals each day.

She says they’re busy but are managing well with what she calls the post-COVID dogs and cats and kittens due to it being kitten season.

She adds cash donations and donations of food and items like towels are always welcome.
