MEDICINE HAT — People are remembering former city council member John Hamill, who passed away last night.

Hamill served several terms on city council, and also ran for mayor twice.

After serving at BATUS, Hamill became the General Manager for the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce.

Dr Ken Sauer was on city council with Hamill and remembers him as a person with a hard look, soft personality and a great friend who was always prepared to speak his mind at council meetings.

“Outspoken in such a way that you knew what he was talking about.” remembers Sauer.

“He could tell you the impact of a decision that was being made or considered because he kept his finger on the pulse of the community itself, and by knowing what the community was thinking about he felt he was making a better decision” adds Sauer.

In a social media post, current councillor Darren Hirsch said “for those who knew John, he said what was on his mind … sometimes with no filter. A larger than life personality for sure.”

Julie Friesen remembers Hamill as ” the most colourful and ‘full of challenge’ alderman I ever served with on Council. He was definitely a force be reckoned with”.

Former councillor Phil Turnbull said “John was a bigger than life kind of man, with an even bigger heart who gave our city his best always.”

Hamill also took a turn as a radio talk show host.

Due to his resemblance to a mascot for the board game Monopoly, Hamill was the face of a 2010 campaign to get Medicine Hat placed on a Canadian version of the game.
