Grandparent scam once again targeting residents in Medicine Hat

Jul 26, 2023 | 2:36 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Police Service has released a statement that they have once again been receiving numerous reports of a scam that is circulating around the city. The scam primarily targets the elderly.

The “Emergency Scam”, or the “Grandparent Scam” as it is also known, has been rampant in the city in the past, and MHPS are reminding citizens to be aware of this fraud and to warn their relatives.

The scam consists of a scammer posing as a family member or friend in urgent need of cash. Often the scenario involves an accident or an arrest while traveling abroad, with a request for cash to be sent through a money transfer company like Western Union or Money Gram.

The most common scenario involves a grandparent receiving a call from someone posing as their grandchild, saying they are in urgent need of cash due to trouble.

The police say that if you or someone you know has received such a request for money, take measures to verify the requestor’s identity and the legitimacy of their story before you even consider thinking about money. The police also say that if you have been a victim of this scam, and have not already reported it, to contact the NHPS at 403-529-8481.
