CFB Suffield to host innovation contest

Jul 24, 2023 | 1:00 PM

RALSTON, AB – CFB Suffield will be hosting a “Pop up city” Contest August 19-26.

The event will be hosted by the Department of National Defence’s Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS). The contest will test prototype solutions that provide integrated energy, water and waste management systems for temporary military camps.

Set up for the event will begin on Monday, July 31, with the tear-down being completed by Sept. 1. Residents are warned that they may notice activity on the base during this period, which includes transportation of sea containers and increased vehicle and personnel presence.

This contest is being held as the Canadian Armed Forces need to be able to quickly “pop up” a small city to provide shelter, food, and plumbing for CAF members while deployed on temporary domestic and international operations. These prototype solutions are aimed to be energy efficient and environmentally sustainable while also providing the CAF with their needs.

Three teams of innovators will be partaking in creating, building, and testing, full-scale working prototypes of integrated water, waste, and energy management systems during the event. The teams of innovators are:

  • Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc.
  • Innocorps Research Corporation
  • SNC-Lavalin Integrated Utility Management System

Those who are interested in learning more about the event are advised to contact Captain Ryan Bartlette at 780-973-4011 (ext. 8184) or ryan.bartlette@forces.gc.ca. Full details can also be found here.
