CALGARY – Jared Parsonage bucked the Calgary Stampede monkey off his back.

The Maple Creek, Sask. bull rider is 2023 Calgary Stampede champion.

“It’s exciting. It’s something, it’s something every rodeo cowboy in Canada wants to win, a Calgary Stampede title. So when I knew I finally got it done it was pretty exciting for sure,” he said Monday.

Parsonage finished second at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth in 2019 and third last year.

Under a new format this year 10 riders competed in three pools early in the week, with the top four from each advancing to the semifinal round. From there the top four advanced to the final round.

Parsonage got better as the week went on. He had scores of 78.5, 83.5 and 85 in pool play and followed that with an 88-point ride in the semifinal.

In the final Parsonage was the only one of the four competitors to stay on for eight seconds and the judges gave him a score of 89 atop Wild Time.

“It’s kind of one of those things just, you know, be consistent riding the bull, things like that,” he said. “If I could do that I’d give myself a chance come Sunday and that’s kind of how it worked out.”

Parsonage won a bronze statue and a $50,000 check for winning. His total winnings for the week were more than $68,000.
