The Alberta RCMP signed their first Memorandum of Understanding with the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association (ACCPA) on Friday.

In attendance at the Alberta RCMP headquarters were representatives from the ACCPA board, Crime Stoppers, Citizens on Patrol and Rural Crime Watch.

With this signing, the Alberta RCMP says it is affirming a commitment to work together towards a shared goal of creating safer and healthier communities throughout the province.

“The Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association looks forward to the development of this partnership in all the work and initiatives we can do together. I am proud of our joint initiatives and all the ways we can now work towards crime reduction together in our communities,” said ACCPA President Jean Bota, former Red Deer County councillor.

The ACCPA says their goal is to create greater safety for Albertans in their communities through education and crime prevention awareness, aligning with the RCMP’s new Community Safety and Well-being branch.

The RCMP says the branch is an enhanced and more coordinated approach to community wellness and includes building community partnerships and working with community members collaboratively to reduce crime and increase accessibility to social supports.

“Engagement and participation with our communities is a great value for our crime prevention strategy and supports our mutual goals for community safety and well-being. This partnership with the ACCPA also supports our existing partnerships with other community groups and gives us more opportunity work collaboratively with our citizens,” said Chief Superintendent Peter Tewfik, Officer in Charge of the Alberta RCMP Community Safety and Well-being Branch.

The Alberta RCMP will now partner with the ACCPA on joint initiatives and promote the ACCPA mandate at detachments throughout Alberta.

The Alberta RCMP states it values its partnerships with community crime prevention groups including Citizens on Patrol, Rural Crime Watch and Crime Stoppers. It adds these community agencies are important allies in the goal to address root causes of crime.

“Working together, police and partners promote safe and healthy communities where law enforcement and communities keep each other informed and educated. Community groups know of issues in their own areas and they can be valuable eyes and ears for the police,” said the Alberta RCMP in a release.
