U.S. Coast Guard confirms Titan debris found at Titanic site

Jun 22, 2023 | 1:22 PM

The United States Coast Guard has confirmed that debris belonging to the Titan submersible has been found near the wreck of the Titanic.

Officials say the missing submersible imploded near the wreckage of the Titanic and there are likely no survivors.

The submersible Titan, operated by U.S.-based OceanGate Expeditions, lost contact with surface vessels on Sunday morning as it was nearing the Titanic shipwreck during a 3,800-metre dive.

It had been chronicling the sunken Titanic ocean liner’s decay and the underwater ecosystem around it since 2021. Many questions about what happened underwater remain.

The people on board included British businessman and world record-holding adventurer Hamish Harding; Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet, who had made multiple trips to the wreck; and businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman. OceanGate CEO and founder Stockton Rush was the pilot.
