WATERTON, AB – On June 12, Parks Canada announced that significant rain over the weekend resulted in the closure of a majority of Waterton Lakes National Park until further notice.

According to Parks Canada, over 55 millimeters of rain on June 11 caused debris to flow, which impacted several areas and roads.

During this time, recreational travel to Waterton is discouraged to allow response operations to take place.

Closures include all backcountry areas and hiking trails, Red Rock Parkway, Akamina Parkway, and all backcountry campgrounds.

Parks Canada recently posted that Akamina Parkway is expected to be closed into the weekend and violators entering prohibited areas could be charged under the Canada National Parks Act, which holds a maximum penalty of $25,000.

Exceptions for the closures only apply to the townsite, Kootenai Brown Trail and Townsite Lakeshore Trail.

Parks Canada is currently assessing all areas of the park. More information will be provided as it becomes available. For up-to-date conditions, visit the Government of Canada website.
