Medicine Hat police seeking volunteers for its support programs

Jun 1, 2023 | 5:00 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service is looking for people who are willing to lend a helping hand. Volunteers are needed to help provide support for those who are victims of crime or have recently gone through a court process.

Roles include providing crisis support, in-station client support as well as court support. The police are willing to take as many people they can take, as long as those who are interested have been screened and cleared. Volunteers will also have to take 50 hours of training on the court and justice system.

Laura Deschamps is the program manager for Victims’ Assistance and says that those who volunteer will have many roles to help ensure victims are getting the support that they need.

“So our volunteers engage in many different aspects in victim assistance. We support clients who are involved or have been impacted through a police report. We help individuals through the court system, we sit with them, we support them, we give them emotional support and practical support after post-incident events.” Deschamps explained Thursday.

A session will be held on Monday, June 19, providing additional information to those who are interested in volunteering. The session runs from 7-8 p.m., and will be held at the MHPS Aahkoinnimaan’ni Board Room.

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the MHPS website for more information on how to get involved.
