Alberta Votes 2023 updates

11:27 p.m.: Alberta has re-elected the United Conservative Party led by Danielle Smith to a majority government.
CHAT News has made the call with 80 per cent of polling stations in the province reporting as of 11:25 p.m. The UCP is leading in 52 of the 87 electoral districts in Alberta, the NDP in the other 35.
11:07 p.m.: CHAT News is projecting the United Conservative Party’s Justin Wright has been elected in Cypress-Medicine Hat. With 17 of 18 polls reporting the Wright has earned 8,305 votes, about 63 per cent of the vote. Cathy Hogg of the Alberta NDP has earned 4,942 votes, about 34 per cent.
10:29 p.m.: Province-wide it is still to close to call with only 45 per cent of voting stations reporting so far. The UCP is leading or the projected winner in 52 of the electoral districts, including the two Medicine Hat ridings. The Alberta NDP leads in the other 35. A party must win 44 seats to get a majority government.
The UCP has 52.3 per cent of the popular vote, the NDP has 44.1 per cent.
10:19 p.m.: The UCP has commanding leads with more than three-quarters of the stations in Brooks-Medicine Hat and half the stations in Cypress-Medicine Hat reporting. CHAT News has already projected Smith re-elected in her riding.

10:10 p.m.: The Canadian Press has declared Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley has been re-elected as the legislature member for Edmonton-Strathcona.
9:45 p.m.: The Canadian Press has declared Danielle Smith has been re-elected as the legislature member for Brooks-Medicine Hat. With 14 of 25 polling stations reporting Smith has 2,501 votes to 533 for the NDP’s Gwendoline Dirk and 274 for the Alberta Party’s Barry Morishita.
9:38 p.m.: A breakdown of the polling stations in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding shows none of the standard stations in the city have reported yet and only one has in the Cypress-Medicine Hat riding.

9:25 p.m.: As results keep pouring in, the UCP continues to expand their lead in both the Brooks-Medicine and Cypress-Medicine Hat ridings. Danielle Smith’s lead expands greatly as does Justin Wright’s. Results continue to pour in.

9:17 p.m.: The UCP expands their lead in the Brooks-Medicine Hat. Results still coming out of Cypress-Medicine Hat as the results have stayed the same for the time being.
Smith holds a sizable lead over Gwendoline Dirk and Alberta Party leader Barry Morishita. Justin Wright’s lead over Cathy Hogg remains the same as results still come out of the polling stations.

8:53 p.m.: The UCP has widened its lead in the two Medicine Hat ridings.
Danielle Smith has about twice as many votes as Gwendoline Dirk and Barry Morishita combined in Brooks-Medicine Hat and Justin Wright has nearly four times as many votes as Cathy Hogg in Cypress-Medicine Hat.

8:47 p.m.: With two per cent of polling stations reporting and just more than 10,000 valid votes counted the UCP is leading in 40 of the 65 electoral districts that have reported votes. The NDP is leading in the other 25 districts and is ahead of the UCP in the total vote percentage 50.99 per cent to 45.35 per cent.
8:37 p.m.: The first results from the Medicine Hat ridings came down just minutes ago. The UCP has jumped out to a big early lead in Cypress-Medicine Hat and has a narrow lead in Brooks-Medicine Hat.

8:29 p.m.: Early results have been posted on the Elections Alberta site.
Out of the 14 electoral districts that have reported so far, the UCP is leading in 11 of them and the NDP in three.
8:23 p.m.: If students in Alberta had their way, the NDP would win a majority government tonight.
Student Vote 2023 reports 170,079 total votes were cast by students from 1,097 schools in every electoral district.
The NDP took 42.1 per cent of the popular vote and won 47 seats, forming a majority government. Rachel Notley won her seat in Edmonton-Strathcona.
The UCP will form the official opposition with 39 seats. The UCP won 40.4 per cent of the popular vote. Danielle Smith won her seat in Brooks-Medicine Hat.
7:50 p.m.: Before the polls close, a quick refresher of the election.
In Brooks-Medicine Hat there are three candidates on the ballot. Gwendoline Dirk is representing the Alberta NDP, Barry Morishita is representing the Alberta Party and Danielle Smith is representing the UCP.
In Cypress-Medicine Hat there are four candidates. Cody Ray Both is running for the Independence Party of Alberta, Cathy Hogg for the Alberta NDP, Matt Orr the Wildrose Loyalty Coalition and Justin Wright the UCP.
In 2019 the UCP, led by Jason Kenney, won 63 seats and the NDP, led by Rachel Notley, won 24.
7:40 p.m.: The polls will close in 20 minutes and CHAT News will have extensive election coverage tonight of results for the Medicine Hat ridings and around the province.
