New steps, accessible ramp for Kiwanis Centre

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Kiwanis Centre in the city’s South Flats neighbourhood is getting upgrades this summer.

The City of Medicine Hat says it is replacing the steps on the east and west entrances and the barrier-free accessible ramp at the building formerly known as the Elizabeth Street School located at 826 11th St. SE.

“Today, we understand the importance of ensuring our buildings are accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of physical ability,” said Jeff Hoglund, manager of building services with the City of Medicine Hat, in a release. “We proactively monitor and replace accessibility features, especially on some of our older structures, as required. We’re grateful for the Government of Canada support to ensure these needs are met.”

The federal government is partially funding the project with a $52,311 grant through its Enabling Accessibility Fund. The city will cover the rest of the project cost, $37,689, through the approved 2023 infrastructure repair program in the city’s facilities management portfolio.

The work is already underway and expected to be complete by the end of July, says the city. The building is open during construction and visitors are reminded to observe all construction signage and barricades for their safety.

The city leases space in the Kiwanis Centre to a variety of non-profit organizations in the community.
