APARC could be forced to euthanize cats for space

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s animal shelter is at risk of having to euthanize cats due to overcrowding at its facility.

The Animal Pound and Rescue Centre (APARC) says in a Facebook post on Thursday that after recent intakes from Cactus Street and the Riverside neighbourhood, it is at “red capacity” in its four-level capacity reporting system.

Red means APARC expects to euthanize for space within 48 hours.

“We unfortunately only have 8 kennel spaces available. There are 92 cats in our care, which does not include the 57 currently in foster! We are in desperate need of even more fosters for both healthy unvetted cats and sick cats in recovery. If you’re interested in fostering any of our amazing adult cats, please reach out or apply online!” the post reads.

“If we’re unable to move cats out of shelter, we are at risk of needing to euthanize for space for the first time ever since APARC was established.”

Staff is tirelessly working to avoid euthanizing and searching for fosters and asking people to consider a discounted adoption option.
