South Carolina House approves abortion ban from about 6 weeks, backs off near-total ban
COLUMBIA, S.C (AP) — The South Carolina House has approved a bill banning most abortions after around six weeks of pregnancy, bringing state Republicans closer to ending a longstanding disagreement over when to restrict access.
The proposal must again clear the Senate after the House inserted a number of changes.
The measure would ban abortion when an ultrasound detects cardiac activity, around six weeks, and before most people know they are pregnant. It includes exceptions for fatal fetal anomaly, the patient’s life and health, and rape or incest through 12 weeks. The House backed off a proposal to ban abortion almost entirely at conception after the Senate recently rejected the measure.
Debate stretched nearly 24 hours split across two days as lawmakers worked through hundreds of amendments filed by Democrats.
