Alberta NDP makes commitment to increase arts funding

May 17, 2023 | 12:09 PM

The Alberta NDP says they will invest $74 million in arts and culture as part of broader plans to revitalize downtown cores and rural communities.

The Alberta NDP Arts Strategy includes:

  • A 50 per cent funding increase to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts
  • A standalone Arts Capital Grants Program to support a range of projects in urban centres
  • Creating a Live Entertainment Advisory Council to showcase and amplify Alberta talent, and coordinate and attract world-class shows and events to Alberta

“Our province is a vibrant and dynamic place to live thanks to the amazing performers and creators who call Alberta home,” said Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley

“Arts are the heart of our culture, our communities and our quality of life and we know there is enormous economic potential that can still be unlocked with the right support from the government.

“That’s why we are committed to increasing arts funding as part of our plan to build a better future.”

They add that cultural capital projects, including performing arts venues, museums, and heritage centres, will also be eligible for grants under the previously announced Hometown Alberta program.

“I am so excited for what the future holds for arts and culture in Alberta,” said Nicole Goehring, Alberta NDP Culture Critic and Edmonton-Castle Downs candidate.

“We have heard the need from so many for a government partner in this area. We heard those concerns and are taking action because we know this sector is critical to building a better future for our economy and our province in general.”
