Medicine Hat prepares for risk of wildfires

May 16, 2023 | 12:26 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat city officials say they are monitoring the current wildfire situation in the province as temperatures are expected to rise into the weekend.

Environment Canada is predicting the mercury to climb above 30 degrees and no rain is expected for at least four days.

There are currently 87 active wildfires burning in the province forcing several communities to evacuate.

Mayor Linnsie Clark says they have been working with the Emergency Advisory Committee to update the city’s plan for this year’s wildfire season.

“We go through all of the different risks for emergency situations in Medicine Hat and make sure that’s being updated constantly. The risk or the severity of a risk will increase over time while others will decrease,” says Clark.

Fire officials say prevention is key and are reminding residents to stay aware of the current wildfire risk.
