Pollster says Calgary votes could decide election

May 2, 2023 | 11:58 AM

Calgary has emerged as a key battleground for this spring’s provincial election.

Pollster Janet Brown says surveys suggest Edmonton is safe territory for the NDP while the rural areas are strong for the United Conservative Party.

She says the NDP is in a position to win 18 out of the 26 seats in Calgary.

But she notes that might not be enough to get to a majority.

Brown says the NDP support is stronger in the city’s north while the UCP has more support in the south.

Candidates say they are hearing about health care, education and affordability at the doors, but also about leadership.

Duane Bratt, a political science professor at Mount Royal University, says the UCP wants the race to be less about leadership and more about party brands.

He says the NDP is focusing on UCP Leader Danielle Smith.

Bratt says the UCP could win if voters look at the parties, but the NDP could win if they base it on leadership.
