MEDICINE HAT, AB – With the provincial election officially underway we wanted to find out what issues residents in Medicine Hat feel are important.

CHAT News spent some time in the downtown area talking to people about the election.

One person talked about the importance of getting out to vote on May 29.

“I think it’s very important that everybody should vote. If they don’t know who they should vote for they should do some research and look into it because it’s very important if you’re not happy with the way things are going to let your voice be in there.”

Another voter said, “We really can’t complain about how there’s like we have a really expensive cost of living right now. We can’t complain when we are not going out and voting and creating change, especially for the community and the younger generations as well, it’s just really important.”

When it comes to the important issues in this election campaign, one senior said health care and education. Another elderly resident stated, “there’s lots of issues that people would like to get straightened out like I said healthcare for one thing and not have to pay out of pocket cause a lot of us are seniors in this town and we can’t afford it.”

A small business owner felt taxes are important and said “You know {Danielle} Smith, she says she’s going to lower taxes but hopefully that comes to fruition. It’s just getting so hard. Somebody needs to do something about the {cost of} groceries.”

Another local business owner believes it’s important to find a balance between government spending and providing needed services for Albertans.

“It’s a toss-up in my household what we do; we like balanced budgets but we also want to care for the people in our community. There’s a lot of hurting people. Inflation is going through the roof, we can blame it on a lot of different factors but we elect our people to take care of us.”

If you still need to register to vote you can head over to the Elections Alberta website. Election day is May 29 with advance polls running from May 23 to 27.
