Medicine Hat Curling Club receives city loan for new equipment

May 1, 2023 | 10:47 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After a lengthy discussion city council has voted in favor of lending the Medicine Hat Curling Club funds to repair its facility.

Council approved a budget amendment that will provide the curling club an interest free loan of up to a total of $1.55 million over a 20 year period.

Operations at the curling club ceased last fall after a major brine leak was discovered.

The loan will be used to purchase a new temporary ice plant and ice mats. Council was told an inspection by city engineers determined the ice plant needed replacement.

The new equipment would provide a curling facility in Medicine Hat for the next five to seven years while the city looks towards a long term solution.

The Medicine Hat Curling Club says the funding will help ensure the club will be in operation for the 2023-24 season.

“The equipment we made is a custom piece of equipment, it will take seven and nine months probably for that to happen from order to install, so in about seven months we will be up and ready to run from when we’ve had approval from the city for the money,” said Cal Hauserman, co-chair of the facilities committee with the Medicine Hat Curling Club.

Before any equipment can be ordered, councillors will need to finalize the funding agreement with a vote on the bylaw during its next regular meeting on May 15.

The Medicine Hat curling Club has 450 active adult members and a growing junior program with 70 members.
