Fire restriction in place for Cypress County following small grass fires

May 1, 2023 | 5:05 PM

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – Due to the wetter conditions this spring, the fire advisory was extended back in April of 2023.

But now with the dry, windy conditions and some small grass fires occurring, tighter fire restrictions are being imposed in Cypress County.

This follows after two small grass fires occurred.

As of April 28th, 2023, the use of incinerators, burning barrels, charcoal briquettes, recreational campfires, and fires within designated camping and recreational areas are officially restricted.

An open burning permit will only be issued at this time, unless first inspected and approved by the Cypress County Fire Chief or Deputy Chief.

In the meantime, residents can still use internal household fireplaces, propane and natural gas appliances and wood pellet smokers.

Kim Dalton, the director of Municipal Services, urges those within Cypress County to practice fire safety.

“During this time, whenever you’re having a controlled fire, so either its with brackets on a barbecue or propane fireplace or even an incinerator on an acreage, then you should have all materials necessary to extinguish the fire,” said Dalton.

According to the by-law, the fire restriction will be in place until Nov. 1st, 2023.
