Apr 24, 2023 | 12:02 PM

BROOKS, AB – The Brooks Bandits split the first two games of the AJHL championship series 1-1 against the Spruce Grove Saints this weekend.

In game one, the Bandits came back from a two point deficit to win 5-2.

The Saints started strong with a two point lead by the second period. Hunter Wallace of Brooks cut into this lead by scoring the Bandits first goal in the second.

Brooks managed to tie the game before the end of the second.

Ukrainian player Danylo Korzhyletskyi shot the Bandits into the lead in the third period. A goal by Fitzpatrick followed shortly after, bringing the game to 4-2.

At the end of the third period, the Saints were forced to empty their net with under four minutes on the clock.

An empty net goal from Fitzpatrick left the Bandits with a big enough buffer to secure the win.

Goaltender Ethan Barwick (St. Albert, AB) made 26 saves for Brooks in this game.

Game two did not go as smooth for the home team, despite outshooting the Saints 34-25.

Multiple power play goals ran the game up 2-2 by the end of the first period.

The Saints took the lead in the second period, and managed to keep that lead by shutting out the Bandits in the third, despite 12 shots on net.

Isaac Abbott and Liam Watkins of the Saints both scored empty net goals in the end of the second to clinch the win.

The Bandits and Saints will head to Spruce Grove for game three Tuesday, April 25, and game four April 26. Both games start at 7:00 pm.

The Brooks Bandits will come home for game five Friday April 28.
