MEDICINE HAT, AB – Students at Mother Teresa School are bringing history to life as they host their first ever wax museum.

Students in grades 4 – 6 were asked to think of someone who had inspired them or made a significant impact in the world.

The students were then tasked to become a living wax version of the person they chose.

Grade 4 student Krypton Hirsch is inspired by these famous words broadcasted during the first moon landing.

“Hi, I’m Neil Armstrong and I got to take one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind by being the first man on the moon.”

Over the past two months Hirsch and his classmates at Mother Teresa School have been researching people who impact them.

They’ve written scripts, created posters and brought their subjects to life with costumes, all while learning about someone they consider a hero.

“I learned a lot about him (Neil Armstrong) and how he was the first man on the moon and I didnt know he had other people with him on the moon,” says Hirsch.

From Scientists, authors, athletes, celebrities and pioneers a variety of historical figures were represented by students.

Vice Principal Cody Young says they were looking for a new way to engage students to look for things they are passionate about and get them interested in their learning.

“The kids have been extremely engaged since day one. When I said ‘you know what we’re going to pick a person that has contributed to their profession in a significant way’ the kids were immediately excited,” says Young.

This is the first year students participated in the wax museum that will replace the schools science fair this year.

Grade 4 student Madison Dobrowlsky found inspiration by Amelia Earhart’s solo flight across the Atlantic ocean.

“She stands up for women’s rights and is a fellow leader for women,” explains Dobrowlsky.

Grade 5 student Davin Brooks is amazed by all the scientific contributions made by Albert Einstein.

“He was very smart and well he learned a lot and went to four different schools before he dropped out and did a bunch of amazing stuff.” says Brooks.

Parents and other students were able to check out all the displays in the school gym throughout the day on April 21.

Staff say the wax museum was a huge success and they plan to bring it back in the next school year.
