MEDICINE HAT, AB – Earth Day is April 22 and there are several activities happening around Medicine Hat this weekend to celebrate the occasion.

The public library is hosting an annual seed exchange event organzined by Community Food Connections Association.

Seedy Sunday runs from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on April 23. The event gives gardeners a chance to donate any extra seeds they may have or try growing something new.

The annual seed exchange event will feature three guest speakers and live demonstrations focused on teaching gardening techniques.

Organizer Gevevieve Mathieu with Community Food Connections Association says it’s a great event to meet fellow gardeners and find a little inspiration in their own backyard.

“Just being outside can be tremendously helpful for our mental health, touching the soil there’s science that supports that is also healing, grounding,” says Mathieu.

“Growing your own food can be so empowering to people and being able to share that with your friends or your family is a beautiful thing,” explains Mathieu.

On April 22 there will be an Earth Day Bash at Police Point Park at the Nature Centre. The event will run between 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM and will feature various activities and an earth day passport which can be turned in to win a prize.

The city is also hosting a community clean up event called the “Litter Blitz”. Garbage bags and gloves can be picked up at the Parks Office at 88 Kipling St. from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

And the city will be selling compost from the landfill at the Parks and Recreation building for $8 a bag. There will also be a metal recycling bin and city recycling bins on site.
