Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter receives funding for facility upgrades

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A new provincial grant will allow the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society to make much needed improvements and upgrades to its facility.

The shelter has received a grant of $336,300 from the National Housing Strategy and Alberta’s Capital Maintenance and Renewal Program.

Out of 18 provincial organizations the Medicine Hat women’s shelter is receiving the second largest funding amount behind E4C located in Edmonton.

The Medicine Hat’s women’s shelter was built 25 years ago and requires several renovations and upgrades to keep it running 24 hours a day.

Part of the grant will go towards the installation of a new fire sprinkler fire suppression system.

Natasha Carvalho, Executive Director, Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, says other upgrades will make the shelter more accessible for anyone seeking its services.

“One of the things as well is that we only have one barrier-free unit. So if we do have somebody that comes in who has accessibility issues they get that room. But you get a second or a third person, you’re kind of hooped,” explains Carvalho.

“We really just want to make sure that we are available for everybody when they need someplace to go and just that we are still the safe place to be when you’re experiencing family violence,” adds Carvalho.

The shelter hopes to begin improvements to the facility this year and says some construction work may affect operations temporarily.
