Prompt funding request by Medicine Hat Curling Club

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Curling Club is seeking immediate financial aid from the city to help cover the cost of new equipment as the club works to reopen for the 2023-24 season.

Club officials have requested one and a half million dollars for new ice-making equipment.

The club is hoping to receive a portion of that money next month to ensure the equipment is installed for the next curling season.

Around 100 members of the curling club packed the council gallery to show their support for the facility, many wearing curling club colours.

The club ceased operation last October after a brine leak along the concrete slabs prevented ice from being maintained.

The club proposed the purchase of a portable ice plant and ice mats that produce zero ozone and greenhouse gasses.

That equipment would serve as a temporary solution until a new curling facility is built in the future.

“If there is a new facility built through the city in the next five to seven years because we are bringing in portable mats and a portable ice plant all of that stuff can be taken, moved and resold or in the case of the ice plant it could be moved to the new facility and used there again,” said Cal Hauserman, co-chair of the facilities committee with the Medicine Hat Curling Club.

Council received the presentation from the curling club. The city says they will keep the club in the loop as they consider the funding request.

Over the last 25 years the curling club says it has created a $28 million economic impact within the city.

The club has been in operation in its current facility for 66 years.
