Carbon Tax

Minister Toews issues statement asking federal government to cancel carbon tax increase

The federal government’s carbon tax is increasing.

The Canadian Press has reported the price is up $15 tonne as of April 1. That means a 5.9 cent per cubic metre increase in the price of natural gas and a 3.3 cent per litre increase in the price of gasoline. The federal government says rebates are also going up.

Alberta’s Minister of Finance and Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA Travis Toews issued the following statement on the increase:

“At a time of already high inflation, the increase of the federal carbon tax will make the cost of everything from home heating and electricity costs to grocery bills more expensive. It contrasts our province’s efforts to keep more money in the pockets of Albertans.

“We urge the federal government to take the affordability crisis seriously and to immediately cancel the increase to the federal carbon tax, or better yet, eliminate the tax all together.

“Elimination of the carbon tax and pausing federal fuel taxes, would help millions of Canadians cope with rising costs.”
